Dunya Karama: Leadership and Cheerleading

Dunya Karama

My name is Dunya Karama, and I currently serve as the administrator at Indiana Institute of Global Health-Kenya. The first day I sat with the incredible women in the Women in Leadership (WIL) program, I knew I had to give myself a chance to bring out the potential I had within me. What I didn’t realize then was just how life-changing this journey would be.

WIL reignited my passion for growth and inspired me to go back to school. This program has given me more than just recognition—it has provided mentorship, a sense of belonging, and a new perspective on leadership. It made me ask myself, “Can I do this?” And the answer was yes, with the right support, patience, and belief in myself.

I was in the pilot women in leadership cohort which became more than just a leadership training; it became a sisterhood—a network of strong, supportive women who not only pushed me forward but also celebrated every step of my journey. Their unwavering encouragement showed me that leadership is not just about individual success but about lifting others as we climb.

Now, as a member of the WIL steering committee, I have the opportunity to give back—to cheer on, mentor and empower other women as they step into their leadership roles. This journey has taught me that leadership is not a solo act—it is a collective movement. And when women support women, we don’t just grow--we rise together.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mercy Oduor, Christine Chuani, Alyllah Msenya and John Oguda Owuor for being my inspiration. Their unwavering belief in me, their words of encouragement, and their leadership have been my guiding light. They have motivated me every step of the way and continue to be my source of inspiration.

To them, and to every woman who dares to lead, support, and uplift others—thank you. This journey is not just mine--it belongs to all of us who believe in the power of mentorship, resilience, and sisterhood. Together, we will continue to break barriers, lift each other up and create lasting change.
