Eunice
Eunice is a wonderful member of the AMPATH oncology team and currently works as a research assistant in a breast and cervical cancer screening clinic in Vihiga County.
Eunice completed a cervical cancer screening in 2015 and was told that there were some abnormalities with her cervix. She was booked into a surgical theater to do a biopsy. Pathological analysis of the specimen revealed that she had cervical cancer Stage 2B1.
In May of that year, she had surgery (a radical hysterectomy) as recommended by her doctor.
“The doctor explained to me very well that there were different ways to treat cancer,” Eunice said. “Since cancer had not moved into other parts of the body, the doctor said it was best to remove the impact through surgery.”
Following her surgery, she was told to eat well and continue with follow-ups with her doctor.
“I consider myself a warrior, a survivor and a victor,” said Eunice.
“I decided to dedicate my daily life to educating women. I bring women together to talk about cancer. Today I want to tell every woman who is eligible for screening, ‘Please, if we want to eliminate cancer out of our lives forever, let’s all of us go and get screened for cervical cancer so that we can be healed as early as possible,’” she said.
Eunice advises other women that have been diagnosed to continue their lives, continue with follow-ups, make sure to visit the doctor and continue screenings.
“Tell others what happened to you. Bring more people, so all of us can be healed,” she concluded.
Special thanks to Stephen Kiptoo, ABCCCP program manager, for helping us tell Eunice’s story.
