Webuye GISHE Groups Demonstrate Success
Two AMPATH community groups in the town of Webuye in Bungoma County were highlighted during a recent visit by members of the AMPATH Consortium.
The Savanna Dispensary in Webuye was founded by one of the GISHE (microfinance) groups. The group used their group savings and some additional funding to construct the permanent structure. Their aim is to bring care closer to patients in their region. The County Government has promised to equip the dispensary and employ health care workers to provide care. Currently AMPATH’s BIGPIC (Bridging Income Generation with Group Integrated Care) team provides group-based care within the microfinance groups in this area.
AMPATH has also partnered with a youth group in Webuye to support a GISHE group to build the poultry value chain. The hatchery project serves as an income generating activity for the members. More than 80 people have since been trained and eight have started a poultry rearing business. The project has capacity to incubate thousands of eggs with a ready market for selling the hatched chicks.
