Maternal fetal medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology focused on the management of high-risk pregnancies and the care of sick moms and sick babies who may need extra intervention.

The MFM fellowship at MTRH, the first of its kind in Kenya, was designed to train physicians to fill an unmet need in this population. The goal is to decrease the rate of preventable maternal and neonatal deaths and to improve medical care, counseling and education for women and their families.

The first two fellows, Drs. Pallavi Mishra and Noah Bett Kipchumba, began in January 2019. In the first six months the program is already having an impact on the care of pregnant women at risk for complications.
