Health Financing
The Kenya Universal Health Coverage goal is to ensure that all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship.
AMPATH Health Financing works closely with the national and county Ministries of Health to support accelerated uptake of the social health insurance in western Kenya especially within the informal sector. This is done through registration of individuals and households into Social Health Authority (SHA), building the capacity of health facilities in claims management, and supporting legislative processes to align with the health financing policies.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) is a government entity established to manage public health insurance in Kenya, with three distinct funds:
Primary Healthcare Fund
covers basic/primary care services and is exchequer funded
Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF)
a contributory scheme which covers more advanced care upon referral from primary care levels
Emergency, Chronic & Critical Illness Fund (ECCIF)
covers emergencies and chronic illnesses beyond the SHIF cover
