It has been raining and cold here at the Equator, leaving the roads a mess of mud and deep divets. Today, I took my American pediatric group (faculty, residents, MPH interns) to visit the Ilula Children's Home run by Empowering Lives International. In the midst of hearing about the dreams that the inspiring Kenyans running the place have for seeing these children grow up and change their country, it was a delight to hear the familiar calls of "Doctor Rachel" from all sides at the primary school and around the orphanage. I have been visiting this orphanage since 2004 and several of the children are my patients at AMPATH. Best of all, most of the children at the home are thriving emotionally and physically.

I love these kids. Well worth a slippery trip over the muddy roads.
