Dr. Joe Mamlin
AMPATH Field Director
After Dr. Mamlin received in bachelor degree from Wake Forest University and his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest, he went to Indiana University to complete his internship and residency. Following this, Dr. Mamlin and his wife, Sarah Ellen, spent two years living in Jalalabad, Afghanistan while Dr. Mamlin worked with a medical school there. Dr. Mamlin was one of the original four Indiana University School of Medicine faculty members that traveled to several developing countries and selected Kenya and Moi University as the partner for IU. He and Sarah Ellen first lived in Kenya in the mid-1990s, while Dr. Mamlin served as the Team Leader. When they returned there in 2000, they saw a country changed by the HIV epidemic and set to work. Now, Dr. Mamlin jumps out of bed every morning, ready to go and smiling.
